iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: 5 Big Upgrades Rumoured Ahead of Launch
Apple's iPhone 18 Pro lineup is still expected months from now, but early leaks point to camera, chip, battery, display, connectivity, and colour upgrades.
Apple has not announced the iPhone 18 Pro series yet, but the rumour cycle is already moving fast. The next Pro iPhones are expected to arrive around September 2026, and early leaks suggest Apple may focus less on a dramatic redesign and more on meaningful upgrades under the surface.
The biggest talking points so far include a more flexible camera system, the next A20 Pro chip, longer battery life, a cleaner front display, stronger connectivity, and a new signature colour. Because these details come from leaks, analyst notes, and supply-chain reports, they should be treated as expectations rather than confirmed specifications.
"The iPhone 18 Pro may not need a full redesign if Apple delivers stronger cameras, smarter silicon, and better everyday battery life."
1. A Smarter Camera System
The camera could be the most important upgrade on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Multiple reports suggest Apple is exploring a variable aperture system for the main rear camera. Unlike a fixed aperture, a variable aperture can physically adjust how much light reaches the sensor.
For users, that could mean better photos in low light, more natural background blur in portraits, and improved control over exposure during video recording. It would also give the camera system more flexibility when moving between bright outdoor scenes and darker indoor environments.
Reports also point to a new three-layer stacked image sensor, possibly supplied by Samsung. If accurate, the sensor could improve dynamic range, reduce noise, and speed up image processing. The telephoto camera may also receive a wider aperture for better zoom shots in weaker lighting.
2. A20 Pro Chip With Better Efficiency
The iPhone 18 Pro series is expected to run on Apple's next-generation A20 Pro chip. Early reports claim the chip may be built on TSMC's advanced 2nm process, which could bring a major jump in both performance and power efficiency.
The claimed gains include faster app performance, smoother gaming, stronger on-device AI capabilities, and improved battery life. Some leaks also suggest the Pro models may include 12GB of RAM, giving Apple more room for multitasking and heavier AI-driven features.
Another reported change is a newer chip packaging approach that places memory closer to the processor. If Apple adopts it, the result could be quicker data access and better overall responsiveness.
3. Bigger Battery for the Pro Max
Battery life may also get a practical upgrade. Reports suggest the iPhone 18 Pro Max could use a battery in the 5,100mAh to 5,200mAh range, which would make it one of the largest batteries ever fitted into an iPhone.
Capacity alone does not decide real-world endurance, but a larger cell combined with a more efficient A20 Pro chip could make the Pro Max noticeably stronger for long workdays, travel, video recording, and gaming. Some rumours also claim Apple may allow a slightly thicker Pro Max body to fit the larger battery.
4. Smaller Dynamic Island and Cleaner Display
Apple is also expected to refine the front of the device. The Dynamic Island may become smaller, creating a cleaner display experience and slightly more usable screen space.
One leak claims the cut-out could become around 35 percent narrower than the current version. Earlier rumours mentioned under-display Face ID, but newer reports suggest Apple may not be ready to ship that change with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
Display sizes are expected to stay familiar: 6.3 inches for the iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9 inches for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. However, newer LTPO+ OLED panels could improve brightness, smoothness, and power efficiency.
5. Better Connectivity and New Colours
Connectivity may be another area where Apple pushes forward. The iPhone 18 Pro lineup is rumoured to use Apple's next-generation C2 modem, which could improve 5G performance, power efficiency, and mmWave support.
There are also hints that Apple may expand satellite communication beyond emergency use cases. Details are still limited, but broader satellite features would fit Apple's long-term push toward safety and off-grid connectivity.
On the design side, the most talked-about colour is a new Dark Cherry finish. The shade is described as a deep wine-red tone and could become the signature colour for the iPhone 18 Pro series. Other expected options include Silver, Dark Grey, and Light Blue.
Will the iPhone 18 Pro Be Worth Waiting For?
If the current leaks are accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro series may be a strong upgrade for users who care about cameras, battery life, and long-term performance. It may not look radically different from recent Pro iPhones, but the internal changes could matter more in daily use.
Apple is also rumoured to be preparing its first foldable iPhone around the same launch window, while the standard iPhone 18 models may arrive later in 2027. That would make the 2026 iPhone launch cycle especially unusual.
For now, the smart move is to wait for stronger confirmation before making a buying decision. But based on the early reports, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could bring some of the most practical Pro upgrades Apple has offered in years.
